KOKOMO, Ind. — When the Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team takes the court for the 2017 season it will have a veteran feel. With 12 returners and seven seniors, the Cougars will look to continue the success of last season when the team went 27-10 overall and 13-3 in the River States Conference while claiming the Conference tournament championship for the second year in a row. The regular season outcome helped take the Cougars to Ottawa, KS and then on to Sioux City, Iowa where they competed in the NAIA National Finals. With the increased skill level of the IU Kokomo volleyball program comes an increasingly difficult schedule.
Opening weekend of the season will be on the road in Columbia, Ky. on Friday, August 18-Saturday, August 19. There, the Cougars will compete in a pair of double-headers beginning with Cumberland University and ending with number 12* Doane University.
The Cougars will host their home opener on Wednesday, August 23 against Marian at 7:00 pm. IU Kokomo's overall record versus the Knights is 2-1 with the Cougars taking the last match 3-0 on August 26, 2015.
Twice in the first three weeks of play IU Kokomo will challenge number 18* Lourdes University, with the final matchup taking place on day one (Friday, September 1) of the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament where three of the four teams (Lourdes, Indiana Wesleyan, IU East and St. Francis) are ranked and made appearances at the national tournament last year.
"The reason we elevated the difficulty of our schedule is, after making it to the final site of the national tournament last season, we felt that we were apprehensive and lacked the confidence to compete against these teams. I believe in our team's ability to compete at this level," Coach Hayes said of the challenges ahead and her 2017 roster, "We may not win them all but I believe we can compete once we conquer the mental hurdle of facing high level opponents. If we are fortunate enough to make the national tournament again, I feel we will be less intimidated and more prepared for the level of competition we will face."
"With only nine home matches this season, don't miss the chance to see your Cougars!"
