RICHMOND, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team finished the 2016-2017 season as the River States Conference West Division Champions and Conference Tournament Runner-Up after dropping a 71-59 decision against number 19, Indiana University East in the final game of the series.
The Cougars completed the season with an overall record of 21-12 and will be attending the 26th annual NAIA National Championship Tournament after qualifying as the RSC West Division winner.
To start the game, the Red Wolves were able to take a commanding lead, going on an 18-4 run en route to a 27-14 score after one quarter. During this time, Deja Felder went 3-6 from three-point, accounting for nine of the 14 points.
In the second quarter, Abby Scott put up six points from the field, but a trio of shots from behind the arc by the Red Wolves sent the Cougars into halftime down, 43-26.
The third quarter saw life come to the defense for IU Kokomo, with the Cougars out rebounding the Redwolves. With help from the boards, three each from Felder, Scott and Whitney Williamson, the Cougars were able to capitalize offensively as well, out scoring IU East 16-8 in the third quarter. IU Kokomo went on an 8-0 streak midway through the third, including four of Williamson's six points for the quarter. This brought the Cougars within seven points of IU East before ending with the period down nine, 42-51.
Fouls were the downfall of IU Kokomo in the final quarter of the game, with the Cougars racking up 10 personal fouls to IU East's one. A pair of shots from three-point range by Felder brought her total to 19 on the night.
Felder also led in rebounds with nine, all defensive, five assists and three steals. She shot 39% from the field and 42% from behind the arc. Williamson finished scoring in double figures as well, tallying 11 points while bringing down six rebounds.
The Cougars will travel to Sioux City, Iowa for the NAIA Women's Basketball DII National Championship Tournament beginning March 8. Seeding and game times will be announced March 1 at 6:00 pm.
