KOKOMO, Ind. – With a 77-48 Semifinal win over Ohio Christian University the Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team has secured their spot in the River States Conference Championship game for the first time in program history.
IU Easts victory over Midway earlier in the day, 85-74, in the East Division also secures IU Kokomo place in the NAIA DII National Tournament for the first time ever.
"I'm proud of the ladies and how well they played tonight! It was an all around effort. Allowing the team to come out on top with a big win against a good team," Head Coach Carlee Cottrell mentioned about the performance post-game.
IU Kokomo set the tone early on when Deja Felder found Dejianna Butler wide open off the initial tip. The Cougars built on this momentum, draining 43% from the field and grabbing 13 rebounds, ending the quarter up, 16-8. Deja Felder posted a three-pointer and Whitney Williamson brought down five boards in this first 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw the Trailblazers open scoring with a three-pointer at 9:32. This helped them mount a comeback to tie the game, 16-16. Ohio Christian went on a 13-0 run to take a 19-16 lead at 7:29. IU Kokomo was able to solidify their lead for the rest of the game with help from a six-point run by Whitney Williamson. A shot from the field by Kambrey Jolley with four seconds remaining in the second quarter took the Cougars into the second half at 30-23.
The Cougars out-scored the Trailblazers in the third quarter, 24-9, after going 64% from the field while also completing 9-10 from the charity stripe. Altogether, the Cougars brought down 12 rebounds in the period. Butler put up five points with Williamson adding six points.
Shooting 58% from the field, 8-10 in free throws and 14 rebounds, IU Kokomo finished the game strong in the fourth quarter. A pair of free throws by Payton Thomson with 1:57 left in the game moved the margin to a game-high 32 points.
Williamson had a double-double in the semi-final showing, with 18 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of them defensive. She went 5-9 from the field while sinking all 8 of her free throws. She also recorded a pair of blocks.
Williamson commented on the team's effort saying, "I thought we played really hard and smart and as a team. We made good decisions and even though we had a little too many turnovers we pulled through and came out with a W."
Three other Cougars tallied double figures in scoring. Butler had 17 points, shooting 70% from the field while also grabbing two steals. Abby Scott tallied 11 points after going 4-5 in shooting. Johnson scored 10 points and contributed a trio of assists.
Felder added five steals and a game-high five assists.
Jolley seized eight rebounds of her own.
With this win, IU Kokomo will travel to Richmond, Ind. to take on IU East in the RSC Championship game on Tuesday, February 28 at 6:00 pm.
"IU East is a well-coached team with a lot of talent! We are excited that we have the opportunity to play in the conference championship game. I know the ladies will come mentally and physically ready for Tuesday's matchup," Coach Cottrell confidently remarked about the upcoming game.
